Halloween around the Globe

It is that time of the year in the USA when everyone goes crazy and starts looking for the perfect Halloween costume. They carve up those pumpkins and get to decorating their houses with scary skeletons and ghosts. Now, since I’m Aussie (we don’t celebrate Halloween), when I think of Halloween, I think of ET the movie. Yeah I know, “go figure”, but I have this image of ET dressed as a ghost, waddling down the street stuck in my head. In Oz we will get the occasional kid with some $2 mask on, knocking on your door with a half arsed “trick or treat” and you just look at them thinking “What the hell do I have to give them?!?” but thats about it. Our shops have few Halloween decorations for sale, but I have never in my life seen anyone in Oz throw a Halloween party.

So why is that?? It seems a lot of countries are influenced by the USA and their traditions, but is Oz the only place that doesn’t care much for Halloween? Are there other countries that celebrate it the way the USA does, or are we just sick and tired of the USA holidays being forced on us to celebrate? So I decided to get out there and ask some of my fellow international Ambrosians what they thought of Halloween; do they celebrate it or do these US holiday traditions annoy them?

Here is what I got back:

Emily88 Lane (UK): “I love the dressing up and such and the games”

Melly Bingyi (Australia): “I don’t celebrate now but I did as a kid …I think a lot of kids still do its a great way to get free lollies, lol”

Oran Nyoki (Japan): “I celebrate Halloween, though I don’t care for it because I don’t really have anyone to celebrate it with though I do get to shoot at bag snatchers with an airsoft rifle”

Cherry Grantly (France): “OMG I totally go nuts over it! lol we have Halloween weekend lol an i love it sad huh i think i go as crazy as xmas over it decorate the house too lol”

Pabl0 Roffo (Canada):
“Well, as an Englishman, I never celebrated it. As a Canadian, I go out on Halloween :) LOL Canadian* gonna get in trouble now…”

x999duk Diesel (Belfast): “lol we do halloween here in belfast :P its ok n a laugh for big kids :P”

Expence Kayamanu (Sweden): “aha.. naww I think it sounds like a lot of fun! :))”

angee McAndrews (UK): “love Halloween, always decorate the house, loved it since i was young.”

Fyn Constantine (Canada): “I’m Canadian, and we have Halloween too. But i think if you’re upset by Halloween you need to take a chill pill. It’s just another reason to have fun.”

Well, it seems that no matter how old or young you are, Halloween is a time to have fun and enjoy. Either that or everyone is just way too nice at Ambrosia… well of course they are, they know how to have fun! So it seems that I need to move as I must live in the lazy arse side of town or I need to borrow the neighbour’s kids and dress them up and use them to get free lollies. It seems that no matter what holiday takes place in this great big world of ours, it’s obvious that people will take advantage of every opportunity to have a fun time and find the kid inside. When in Rome…

So Ambrosians, it’s time to shop for that perfect Halloween costume and join us at Ambrosia on the 27th of October between 1 and 4 PM SLT for a massive Halloween party. Because no matter where a tradition started, its great to know the whole world can enjoy it together.
