Since I work at a busy club, Ambrosia Dance club, I see many people come and go and I have a terrible weakness.. I am addicted to inspecting what people are wearing. The sad thing is I see so many people wearing stolen – ripped things (hair mostly) When I see such a person I usually IM them to tell them – they usually have no idea!
I remember one girl once told me she got the hair when she joined SL and she thought it is a free starting pack for noobs. Oh well, honey it is not! Someone used a copybot and stole it, re-packaged it, and sold it as their own product.
I know many times people wander around the grid and see what they think is a bargain and buy it. But many times the item they are purchasing is actually stolen.
Since most of us would like to not be part of the problem of supporting thieves who steal the hard work of others, I decided to make some tips on how to you can see if an item you are about to purchase is stolen.
1. It is stolen 100% if someone tosses you a pack of full perm hair, skins… Skins and hair are usually NO TRANSFER!
2. Check the creator- click properties and see who made the item, then go to creator’s profile and see if there is something written in the profile– like a hair store.. anything what could tell you he is the creator. Empty profiles are weird if the date of creation is not that old!
3. Inspect it- Rez the item on the floor, right-click and go more, more and inspect. In 2.0 viewer check the item’s profile and then click details. (see the photos)There you can see all about the item. Check the creator’s profile. (Note: hair contains a lot of prims, it is best to do this in a sandbox.) The huge indicator can also be – most thieves often don’t even change the original name of the hair. (for example- you see “Truth” or “ETD” hair name and the creator is totally different then it should be.)
4.If you see stolen stuff is sold … then contact the real creator and let them deal with it further.
The key is- buy things from trustful stores, period, not some *cough* brazilian nude beach*cough* (I made that up) If you need help, IM me in world.
PS: You can also inspect the vendor where the item is bought… if you are not sure it is original.. so you can inspect and go under content and click on it and see the creator under properties.
Please note that the object used to take example photos has nothing to do with stolen content. I just used it to show how to inspect in 2.0 viewer.
